Trailhead Location and Access

The Shotgun Creek Recreation Site, which includes the trailhead for the Shotgun Creek Trail, is located approximately 30 miles northeast of Eugene, Oregon. To access the trailhead from Eugene, drive east on I-105 to the 42nd St./Marcola exit, then turn left on Marcola Road and continue for about 18 miles. Turn left onto Shotgun Road and proceed for 1.6 miles to reach the recreation area on your right. The site is open for day use year-round, but facilities are closed from November through April. A $5 day-use fee or a valid BLM Northwest Oregon Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required from May through October. The parking area provides ample space for visitors and serves as the starting point for several trail options within the recreation site.

Elevation Change and Difficulty

The Shotgun Creek Loop Trail offers a moderate hiking experience with an elevation gain of approximately 800-950 feet over its 4.6-5 mile length. The trail’s highest point reaches about 1,310-1,375 feet above sea level, while the lowest point is around 700 feet. Despite some steep sections, particularly along the Drury Ridge Trail where hikers encounter about 500 feet of elevation gain over 0.8 miles, the overall difficulty is rated as easy to moderate. The trail features several switchbacks to manage the elevation changes, making it accessible for hikers of various skill levels. The terrain is generally well-maintained, though it can become muddy during the rainy season.

Route Length and Surface Conditions

The Shotgun Creek Trail system offers a main loop of approximately 5 miles, with the option to extend or shorten the hike using connecting trails. The trail surface is primarily composed of natural forest floor, including dirt, rocks, and roots, which can become muddy and slippery during wet seasons. Hikers are advised to wear waterproof boots, especially in winter and spring, as the trail can be very wet and muddy. The path varies in width and condition, with some sections featuring well-maintained trails and others presenting more rugged terrain. Throughout the loop, hikers may encounter occasional fallen trees or debris, particularly after storms, though the trail is generally kept in good condition by maintenance efforts. The varied surface conditions contribute to the trail’s moderate difficulty rating and provide a diverse hiking experience through the low-elevation forest of the mid-Willamette Valley.
