Trailhead and Access Points

The Ruth Bascom Riverbank Trail System offers multiple access points, making it easily accessible from various locations in Eugene and Springfield. The main trailheads are located at Alton Baker Park (100 Day Island Rd), Maurie Jacobs Park (169 Fir Ln), and Skinner Butte Park (130 Cheshire Ave). Additional parking and access are available at Island Park (200 W B St) in Springfield. The trail system’s extensive network allows users to join from numerous points along its route, including the Valley River Center parking lot, which provides convenient access to both the east and west sides of the river. Five pedestrian/bike bridges strategically placed along the trail offer flexibility in creating various loop options, with the longest loop spanning nearly 12 miles from the Owosso Bridge to the Knickerbocker Bridge. This well-connected system enables visitors to easily customize their route based on preferred distance and scenery.

Route Length and Surface Conditions

The Ruth Bascom Riverbank Trail System offers an extensive network of paved paths totaling approximately 14 miles in length. The trail is divided into four main sections: the North Bank Path (~5 miles), South Bank Path (~4.5 miles), East Bank Path (~2.5 miles), and West Bank Path (~2 miles). The surface is primarily paved and in good condition, making it suitable for various activities including walking, running, and cycling. However, users should be aware that some sections may become slippery due to goose droppings, moss, and rain, particularly during wet weather. The trail system features minimal elevation gain, with only about 50 feet (15.24 m) of change throughout its entirety, making it accessible for users of all fitness levels. Regular maintenance is conducted to improve trail conditions, such as the recent work on the North Bank Trail to widen portions to 12 feet and resurface approximately 1.5 miles with concrete.
