This natural area bordering the Willamette River provides accessible fishing spots along gravel trails, making it an ideal destination for anglers seeking bass, panfish, and potentially catfish in a scenic setting.

Quick Info

Location
Delta Ponds is a 150-acre natural area in Eugene, Oregon, situated along the Willamette River near Valley River Center.

Fishing Opportunities
Anglers can target species such as largemouth bass, bluegill, crappie, bullhead catfish, and occasionally rainbow trout.

Access and Amenities
The area features accessible trails, parking, restrooms, and fishing platforms, making it convenient for visitors.

Regulations
Fishing is permitted year-round; however, anglers should adhere to Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife regulations.

Additional Activities
Beyond fishing, Delta Ponds is popular for bird watching, with over 120 bird species observed, and offers scenic walking paths.

Access Points and Trails

Delta Ponds offers multiple access points and trails for anglers and nature enthusiasts. The main parking area on Goodpasture Island Road provides restrooms and a paved ADA-accessible path leading to a viewing platform. Nearly a mile of pedestrian gravel trails, bridges, and viewpoints encircle the ponds, offering various fishing spots and opportunities for wildlife observation. For those seeking a longer route, the East Bank section of the riverfront bike path passes through the area, allowing runners and cyclists to enjoy the scenery.

  • Planned improvements include:
    • A new pedestrian bridge
    • A 1000-foot trail extension to the north
    • A new access point at Goodpasture Island Road
    • Completion of a barrier-free 1.5-mile loop trail around Delta Ponds

These enhancements aim to improve accessibility and create a more comprehensive trail network for visitors to explore the diverse habitats and fishing opportunities within Delta Ponds.

Fish Species Diversity

Delta Ponds offers a diverse array of fish species, making it an attractive destination for urban anglers. The ponds are primarily known for their populations of bass and panfish. Largemouth bass are common in the quieter, weedier parts of the ponds, while various panfish species such as bluegill and crappie thrive in the shallower, warmer areas. Key fish species in Delta Ponds include:

  • Largemouth bass
  • Bluegill
  • Crappie
  • Catfish

The ponds also support some native species. Notably, juvenile Chinook salmon have been observed in the ponds during winter months, thanks to restoration efforts that reconnected the area to the Willamette River. While not a primary fishing target, their presence indicates the ecological importance of Delta Ponds. Anglers should be aware of local regulations and any catch-and-release requirements, especially for native species.

Scenic Wildlife Viewing

Delta Ponds offers exceptional wildlife viewing opportunities, making it a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and photographers. The restored wetlands provide habitat for a diverse array of species, including over 155 bird species that have been identified in the area. Visitors can observe:

  • Great Blue Herons, Green Herons, and Bald Eagles
  • Western Pond Turtles, Eugene’s only native turtle species
  • River otters and beavers, often spotted during dusk or early morning
  • Various waterfowl, including Gadwall, Wood Duck, and Green-winged Teal

The ponds’ interconnected channels and riparian areas offer scenic views year-round, with spring and fall migrations providing peak bird-watching opportunities. Interpretive signs throughout the area allow for self-guided tours, enhancing the educational experience for visitors. To protect the delicate ecosystem, it’s important to stay on designated trails and follow park guidelines, such as keeping dogs leashed and refraining from feeding wildlife.
