Oregon Parkinsons Warriors Foundation: Where Movement Meets Community
Knocking Out Parkinson’s Disease One Punch at a Time!
Since founding in May 2023, the Oregon Parkinson’s Warriors Foundation (OPWF) has been a lifeline for people living with Parkinson’s in Lane County. Driven by movement, expertise, and unwavering support, this Eugene-based nonprofit is redefining how individuals with Parkinson’s disease reclaim strength, confidence, and joy.
At a Glance: What OPWF Offers
1. A Gym Made for Warriors
In Fall 2024, thanks to generous community donors, OPWF opened Eugene’s first dedicated Parkinson’s fitness center—the Warriors Gym. It’s more than just a workout space; it’s a welcoming, uplifting place where science-informed exercise meets heartfelt community support.
2. Research-Based Movement Programs
OPWF specializes in non-contact boxing and high-intensity, group-based exercise routines tailored specifically for Parkinson’s. These sessions deliver not only physical benefits—like improved strength, balance, motor coordination, and cognitive engagement—but also emotional resilience. As their founder, Lori Havas, explains, “high‑intensity exercise creates neuroplasticity… the best medicine is delivered with some fun”.
3. Supportive & Inclusive Community
Classes are offered across different levels—from independent mobility to those needing support or seated options (Levels 1–2 and 3–4), plus one-on-one training tailored to individual needs opwf.org. Monthly support groups—for both Parkinson’s warriors and their care partners—offer vital social connection and shared encouragement.
4. Heartfelt Vision, Exceptional Leadership
Founder & Executive Director: Lori B. Havas—an ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist and Parkinson’s Disease Fitness Specialist—is the driving force behind OPWF. Her experience teaching Parkinson’s-specific classes since 2010 and her Lane County Health Care Hero award reflect her deep commitment and capacity Rex Foundation City Club of Eugene.
