Fix-It Booths: Free Community Repair in Lane County

Repair, Reuse, and Reconnect With Your Community

If your toaster’s on the fritz, your favorite sweater has a tear, or your bike just won’t shift right, there’s a new way to get it fixed without breaking the bank—or tossing it in the landfill. Fix-It Booths and Fix-It Fairs are popping up around Lane County, giving neighbors the tools, skills, and helping hands they need to keep everyday items in working order.

What’s the Difference?

Fix-It Booths

Think of these as “pop-up repair stations.” A single skilled repair coach sets up at a community hub—like a farmers market—offering repairs and advice on a regular schedule. Lane County’s Waste Wise program has piloted these in towns like Cottage Grove, Florence, and Oakridge, making repairs more accessible in rural areas.

Fix-It Fairs

Bigger events with multiple volunteer “fixers” working at the same time. You can bring small appliances, clothing, electronics, bicycles, toys, and more. The goal? Fix it while you watch—and teach you how to do it yourself next time.

How It Works

1. Bring Your Item – Small, portable items only (clothing, lamps, toasters, bikes, etc.). Clean them first and bring any parts, cords, or manuals you have.

2. Work with a Fixer – Skilled volunteers diagnose the problem, attempt the repair, and walk you through the process. Repairs aren’t guaranteed, but the learning is priceless.

3. Take Skills Home – Many participants leave with more than just a working item—they gain the know-how to tackle their next fix at home.

Why This Matters for Lane County

  • Keeps items out of landfills – Extends the life of what we already own.

  • Saves money – Free repairs instead of costly replacements.

  • Builds community – Neighbors helping neighbors, one repair at a time.

The Lane County Waste Wise program’s new booth model means you don’t have to wait for a big annual event—repair help can be available at your local market throughout the year.
